if it helps...
When accessing remote 'puters through file sharing in Classic and actually selecting the visible Desktop Folder in the displayed remote directory, the icons of various things, but not all, do tend to occupy their respective places on the remote desktop if the view of the window is set to Icons or Buttons, and that goes back to 8.1 on my little LC475 that I keep as part of my network mix; removable media and volumes definitely don't show up, a little OS X prophecy i guess ;).

There was an HI decision made some time ago that icon positions on the desktop and icon positions in the window of the desktop folder should be independent

Which is, of course, counter to the way it worked in Classic Finder. There, the icons in the window were in the exact same locations as the icons on the desktop, as I always expected they should be.

Go figure.

I'm pretty sure the Classic Finder couldn't display the contents of the desktop in a window.
