Woah! Typo fan!
Wait a minute, a quick check in OS9 (dead, but alive?) with Keycaps will
reveal that "alt" is in the _shifted_ position,
(just like on the UK keyboard),
option symbol being in -normal- position, each giving different characters.

On UK keyboard layout, shift 2 = the "at" symbol
option 2 = the "Euro" symbol
shift option (= the "alt" key) 2 = the "TM" symbol
The last two swapped for US keyboard; "Euro" less important for the US, "TM"
symbol being more popular, (opposite for UK)!

Funny, "num lock" works for me on pre-G4 PowerBook & iBook, giving
"calculator" keys, and even using the "fn" key (matching grey) does that
too.
