In my experience the fastest is to run it as a compiled script (not an

applet)
This is true unless the script calls UI actions (click menu, click mouse) in which case the script will not run properly UNLESS it is an applet. I must call an applet if I want to manipulate finder windows, otherwise the UI actions don't run until the rest of the script has finished. Unfortunate, but I have found no way around this.
