I'd like to say something like:

tell application id "FMP5" -- Because File Maker Pro/Developer
5/5.5/6 all have the same id

... but that doesn't seem to work.

You might have to set up and manage your own internal list of aliases. Maybe you could even tell the apps apart by differences in their dictionaries or something.

Another alternative would be to change the creator code of one of the apps. ;)
