Displaying messages

Other than using display dialog is there any other way to display messages that would not require user interaction? Ideally what I would like to display is something like: Doing X Process, Number of files: XX, Files remaining: XX and have it change dynamically as each file is processed.(I building this for version 9, not OS X).
