It's hard to find something better than GraphicConverter for an
automated operation of this kind, and at $35 a pop, it's a steal,
a flich, a pilfer, a pinch, a half inch....

There is a script at the site that says it does some sort of
thumbnail thing:

<http://www.lemkesoft.org/scripts/thumbfm.sit>

"This script will take images, create "thumbnails" (using Graphic
Converter) for placement into a FileMaker Pro database for the
purpose of creating a photo database. It keeps track of the file
path of the original high res image by putting that path in a
field in the layout. The thumbnails are stored in another
location and because of limitations with FileMaker's scripting
implementation, the thumbnails are linked to - so be sure to pick
a spot to put them in that won't be changed anytime soon."
