Have you tried giving the applet more CPU? I know there's a way to give running apps more CPU, but can't remember. Go to macosxhints.com and search there. Still, you should have to be the one doing this every time. Sounds like applets just don't use a good number for WaitNextEvent or however they give up time between events.
