I tried using Paste reference with Finder and TextEdit and the menu option was always dimmed. Anyone have any luck in getting it to work? Thanks.

The Finder stopped putting the right thing on the Pasteboard (clipboard) a few releases ago. We're trying to convince them to put it back. SE2 is working correctly, but it's lonely, it has nobody to talk to.

In 10.2.8 copying a Finder item puts a string and a Unicode text on the clipboard, according to clipboard info.
