If you go into System Preferences -> Date & Time, you can tell the OS to use a network time server to synch it's time up with (it's on the Date & Time tab in Panther, I remember it there in Jaguar also but don't remember exactly where). By default, the system gives you some options to synch up with Apple's time servers in the US, Asia, Europe ...

I want to start using one of our own servers instead (it's setup as a stratum 3 NTP server, which uses a few servers to synch with including Apple's). I know I could just change the ntp.conf file to do this, but if someone hits that drop down bar suddenly I have no choice but to pick Apple's servers again (it overwrites the ntp.conf file immediately and without further provocation) ...

Although it won't let you switch, I am using Jaguar and when I edited the ntp.conf, and go to date/time to pick a server, it shows me both servers, my internal and the apple one.

Interesting. In Panther this file is overwritten by the selection you make in the System Preferences screen.

Ken suggested that I just change permissions on the ntp.conf file, which might work except when you try to do a Repair Permissions on the system I would think it would "fix" it back (note that I didn't try this, but it seems logical).

SJWL identified where to find the list, which was disheartening. A .plist file would be easy to copy onto other machines, replacing a nib (or the entire prefPane) is a little more ... intensive (not out of the question though).

I did get an idea from another list that I never thought to try myself ... you can type the server name directly in the "popup button"! Although it doesn't make it part of the popup list itself, it's an easy solution that'll work good enough for me!

Thanks to all for your input and suggestions on this! What a cool list!!!
