The error number returned in the dialog was 5, the characters got changed in
the email transmission?

Yes, this list decapitates 8-bit characters. Just make sure you send straight quotes instead of curly quotes (you did have straight quotes in the MacScript parameter, but not in the narrative portion of your email).
