I'm curious what people use for backup. I've been using SilverKeeper,
which came with a LaCloud external fw disk. SilverKeeper runs under
Classic, which I _thought_ was a 'heritage feature' until I started
thinking about permissions and those pesky invisible folders again.

So, "How to back up?" drag&drop? .Mac Backup? (_only_ works with .Mac
accounts? worth $100/yr? etc.) SilverKeeper? OTHER?

I use two approaches. I use Synk (http://www.decimus.net/synk/), to back things up to external drives. This gives a fairly complete copy, and has a number of useful features. Recently Synk changed from Freeware to Shareware, but I'm fairly sure that .edu users can get it free. I've found synk dependable and cooperative.

I also like to back my $HOME directory to CDs weekly or so. Synk doesn't work well in this system, so I ended up writing my own Applescript to back up files that changed since the previous backup, skipping the Library (since I didn't want to back up cache files and stuff) and invisibles. I can post the script if you want, though it uses 24U Appearance (shareware) in the dialogues and for progress bars and may be otherwise me-centric. It seems to work pretty well, though.
