Hi All,
We have a winner! This works:

tell app "Finder" to open file filePath using application file id "ttxt"

I'm not how or why this one worked and the others failed but I'm happy to
report that it works. Thank you to all for your help. I apologize for using
up so much bandwidth on what should have been so simple a thing to do. It
was kind of exciting to see a few other discussions spring from this topic.
You've all been a great help.

Thanks,
Craig
