This brain-dead list server software can't display high-order ASCII characters on the English keyboard, but it has no problem with Hiragana and Kanji. Go figure.

It may yet be still more funny.
Takaaki Naganoya's message had following MIME headers:

Content-type: text/plain; charset="ISO-2022-JP"
Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit

and thus used a pure 7 bit encoding of some japanese character set (JIS X-0208-1997 to be precise ;-) ).
From the list server's point of view, no problem so far: it just let those 7 bit characters through, and my client application, as well as yours, could perfectly render those japanese characters (well, I think so, as I don't read Japanese...).

Now, you replied to Takaaki Naganoya's message, and I got some gibberish characters (see above). Looking at the headers, one can read:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by lists.apple.com

So, the list server gracefully removed the quoted-printable encoding from your mail (as lots of servers now do; don't know whether is is a good idea or not), but defined the transport as 7 bit...

As a result, some relaying server (or possibly the originating server itself) stripped the high bit off, and I received a nice UTF-8 message full of... 0-127 only characters.

Wondering how my message will be handled,
Axel
