list; and it seemed that a bug really is at work somewhere...
Identical data in an identically-named file, for sure. (It gets
freshly re-created each time I run the script.) I also wrote a
separate, tiny script that simply read the file. It also had the bug.
I'm also about 95% certain that I tried it on a different file and got
the same result.
FWIW, the problem first appeared right after I modified the routine
that creates the file, to put a telephone number into a field that had
previously been null. However, the problem persisted even when I
temporarily undid the modification.
As your reply somewhat augmented my astonishement, I went back to your
original message.
And... huho: I had read "There are non-ASCII..." instead of "There are
no non-ASCII...".
And the (possible) bug I thought about seems to be related to the
presence of non-ASCII chars in the file.
