At 10:34a +0100 07/06/2004, Oz Springs didst inscribe upon an electronic papyrus:

Is is possible to get the first 11 characters of the currently open file name (or a selected file name in Finder) via an AppleScript and pasting them to the clipboard?

I can answer yes about selected file, but I don't know what you mean by "currently open file name" so I can't answer that part. (??)
