I've maintained for years (starting around 1965) that it has to be either
I = Input
O = Outtake

Or
I = Intake
O = Output

There is a sudden viewpoint shift in the correct definitions given by
Andrew.

But then, it was also in about 1965 that I got a specification changed...the
original declared that a given machine had to fit through a standard office
door. I claimed--successfully--that it was the office doorway that the
machine should be going through. ;-)
