existence and addressing of smb mounted volume

In my ignorance, I thought that once a volume was mounted one was about the same as another no matter how it started out. but, apparently not as a script seems to be having a problem seeing any of the files where the appear to be.

First of all, this is in Jaguar. I know, i had almost forgotten it existed, by now. Second, the volume is mounted via SMB. First it was accessed via "connect to" etc with its i.p. address, then an alias was made to launch it on subsequent restarts.

You see a volume named "share" on the desktop.

I was trying to get at files in such a manner:

alias "share:thisfolder:afile.txt"

It looks like it's there, but not to applescript. Anyone got a quick slap upside my head about how scripts look at such volumes?
