How are the computers connected? Are they on the same subnet ?
The "network guys" can only close the connection on the gates if the communication is thru those gates.

I would try with two computers connected directly, then go from there. Also, everything I said is from X to X. Since I am running X and 8.6, I can not connect via AS 8.6->X but I *yes, can* connect X->8.6 using AS
