Here's one I had worked on...and it's not in the resource fork, it's part of
the file metadata, and no, they are not the same thing.

This was originally written for OS 9, so it also truncates to 31 chars, etc.
It's decently commented, and has quite a few file types in there already.
It was re-saved as a carbon applet, and I haven't touched it since. The
source is in the script, so use it as you need.
