That has always worked - AppleScript does the coercion itself.
It is surely very minor, and I won't check further now, but I'm pretty sure that's wrong. The app coerces or does not coerce, according to what the programmer decided.
In Smile and the Satimage osax, we had to drop the option of passing file paths as text because of a minor bug of some version of the OS: the OS would in some cases say "yes that text looks like a regular file path, go on with coercion" while it was not, whence rare but unpleasant systematic crashes.
