In a way, but mostly because of our expectations. If we see an icon on the
desktop, it's there because we chose it to be there. We actively ran an
installer or unpacked an archive.
Links on the web are entirely different beasts. The main difference is
precisely that they *can't* read and write freely on our hard disks. The
browser has extremely strict controls over how much access a document
loaded over http has on the users system.
I can certainly see some uses for 'missing link', especially in closed
intranets, but I dont really agree it's just as safe as any icon on my
desktop, because *I* am always partly responsible for exactly which icons
are on my desktop. Plus, if I open a folder, I don't expect some folder
action to trash my HD, because I (i.e. administrator) am the only one
who's allowed to hook up folder actions.
I don't mean to be a party pooper, but put it this way: Would you install
'missing link' on your primary browsing machine and advertise the fact on
a website (perhaps alongside your own email address)?
