Besides, it is not a universal convention; the British put the period
outside the quotation marks unless a complete sentence is being
quoted.
Which has always made a lot more sense to me. My American English
teacher keeps on marking me off on my papers, though!
I swear I found a reference years ago in a style book (I think
Webster's little book of style) referring to this by the name of
something like internal and external quotation - so that when quoting
words for "emphasis", the period goes outside. Alway's made a heck of
a lot more sense to me, although I confess *maybe* always putting it
inside looks a tad bit prettier.. (image of some hrrmph'ing
lead-type-setter person coming to mind..)
