FYI a bit of googling was all that was needed.
The EXIF data can be retrieved using perl and you'll find a very useful
example here (5.6k):

And there is plenty of information on each manufacturers use at
www.exif.org, including a description of the Nikon version here:
http://www.exif.org/samples/nikon-e950.html
Today might be a good day for doing that perl tutorial I'd always meant to
get around to doing :-)
