I was trying to get it for a carbon app (running or not) on 10.2.6
thru 10.2.8 systems.

OK good; the aforementioned bug won't affect many Carbon apps, since
they're rarely .app packages. This means 'short version' returned by
the 'info for' osax should work just fine. And that's pretty easy.

Does someone have a easy way to get a version number of a application?
Easy? Not really, due to a bug in OS X pre-Panther. I recently came
up with a workaround, and posted pieces of it to this very mailing
list.
Do you need it for a running app, or just an application file?
Also, what versions of the OS do you need it to work on?
