Long filenames

We are seeing an increasing number of customer files that will not transfer from the Mac to the Win2000 server. The Error says "You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long..."

First, what is the root of this problem?
(I suspect AppleTalk, but I have to use it or I loose resource forks on mac type 1 fonts)

Second, is there a scripting solution around it?
