I am STILL stuck!

This works:
export movie 1 to alias new_file

but only if new_file gets defined by this:
set new_file to "tategoi:Users:watts:Desktop:test_movie.mov"

If new_file is defined by this:
set new_file to (path to desktop as string) & "test_movie.mov"

it fails. So in other words, there is no difference between the behavior of
export movie 1 to alias new_file as QuickTime movie using settings alias "Digital:resources:quicktime player bits:sd_pixlet_1.5.qtes" with replacing

and this

export movie 1 to file new_file as QuickTime movie using settings alias "Digital:resources:quicktime player bits:sd_pixlet_1.5.qtes" with replacing

Coercion at work, I guess.

I am still stuck trying to get the file export to work with a name that is not explicity supplied as a text string in the script.
