I used VectorWorks (previously MiniCAD) for years. It's a great
all-rounder with excellent 2D tools, good 3D tools, plug-ins, very
powerful scripting language (based on Pascal), parametrics, large
symbols library covering every sort of discipline, and built in
spreadsheet & database capability. VectorWorks does have crude
AppleScript support in the form of 'do script...' and then a Pascal
command/script in a string. For the features you get, it's incredible
value. <http://www.nemetschek.net/>
<Chuckle.> You know, I worked on MiniCad for about ten years. (The
name change happened after I left, though it was debated every
release.) Incidentally, the package didn't change hands; it's that the
original company (Diehl Graphsoft) got bought by Nemetschek. It's all
still the same people, just with another layer of management at the
top.
I've been out of touch with the CAD world for about six years now, so I
can't add much useful information, though I will say that ArchiCAD,
while it's a fine product, is quite architecture-specific, as you might
guess from the name. As for doing electrical simulation, there's a
rather large distance between "you could write it" and "you would want
to do it". Vectorworks does fine at drawing circuits, and the
spreadsheet can be a major win, but doesn't do simulation out of the
box that I'm aware of. OmniGraffle does do simple circuits, but it's
more for toy stuff. If you want something real, I'd start with one of
the SPICE derivatives.
