Set Volume / Get Volume ?

Hi.  I have a question about the system volume using AppleScript.

I am able to easily change the system volume using the "set volume" command followed by an integer from 1 to 7.

Is there any way for me to determine what the system volume is currently set at?

"get volume" does not seem to work. Is there such a command? Or alternatively, is there perhaps a file somewhere that I could peer into using AppleScript to find this setting?
