David,

Why not just use OS X's Standard Additions OSAX?

Here's the relevant part:
get volume settings: Get the sound output and input volume settings
get volume settings
Result: volume settings -- a record containing the sound output and input volume settings

Gives:

{output volume:58, input volume:85, alert volume:72, output muted:false} on my machine.

HTH.

Rick

If you don't mind using a Scripting Addition, Jon's Commands has a nice implementation of this using its "sound volume" command.

You can get it here: http://www.osaxen.com/jons_commands.html

What you get there is the OS 8 version. For some reason Jon hasn't posted the OS X version there yet and still refers to it as a development version (not even beta!), but it works just fine. You can get Jon's Commands X 3.0d3 at http://www.seanet.com/~jonpugh/
