If you can't convice your users to choose a different word processor, you
may have to consider adapting your TextEdit scripts so that they work with
AppleWorks documents. AW can handle text files, albeit awkwardly, but
TextEdit can't open AW word processing documents - at least not without
displaying a heap of garbage before and after the text content of the file.
There's no perfect solution, sadly, that embraces both types of document.
It's remiss of Apple, when they have beavered away so diligently to make
TextEdit Microsoft Word-friendly, not to have extended the same courtesy to
AppleWorks. However moribund, it _is_ the default word processor for most
new Mac users.
