Nein... it's properly called an "esset" in English.
Yes, it's called by both names in my old
University German text, but the two German profs
I had, both of whom were German born, raised, and
educated, always referred to it as a sharp s when
speaking about it, and only an esset when
spelling a word in which it appeared.
