To the best of my knowledge it is called a "Ringel S" (describing its shape).
Some time during the 20th century it got replaced (possibly due to
typewriters?) more and more often by both "ss" (sharp s) and "sz" (Eszett),
which I assume explains that phoneticism "esset" which I'd never heard of. My
impression is that "sz" is probably closer to how a Ringel S was pronounced
than "ss" (although the right pronouciation may actually have differed per
word - not to mention regions :)), but to say the character itself is an
"esset" sounds wrong to me. (Then again, Helmut called it an E
he should know :))

Ringel S oder nicht, daß ist die Frage.
