we have, in fact, talked about adding services to do this. But -- it takes time, resources, budget, work. We needed to upgrade and fix what we had before we started adding new stuff. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we add something like this down the road. But taht project hasn't started yet, although I plan on kicking off internal discussions in October.

Though I appreciate some peoples desire for a Web board, I personally can't stand the thought. Web boards seem fine for casual support forums and other instances where there's no desire to develop a "community" or a cohesive list culture. On the other hand, mailing lists are insular and tend to develop their own personalities, and they are no intuitive for many folks to use, so they are a more contained environment.

I think Apple could do well with both approaches, but I think figuring out which approach works for what kind of community is important. I believe the lists work really well for the developer scenes - and so we have lists.apple.com - and I see the Web boards work great for support forums - and so you have discussions.info.apple.com

IMHO, you're already doing this right.

Perhaps you should have a newbie Web forum for many of the same subjects as the lists, with the clear distinction that those are for folks who are unlikely to subscribe, that the forums are manned by Apple staff (as a support effort), and that if someone is showing great interest they should instead be encouraged to join the list.

Perhaps a Web digest version of the lists isn't a bad idea, I've seen some sites that merge lists and forums well, but I'll still greatly prefer the email format - for convenience and for the relatively insulation it provides. People have to want to join - much less likely to get folks stumbling in, disrupting (intentionally or otherwise), and going OT.
