Good question, but I still need the Finder because I have to use it to
make a new file on the desktop.
Just to reiterate the problem:
tell application "Finder" to get path to desktop as string
result==>> "k8:Desktop:"
tell application "Finder" to get folder "k8:Desktop:"
result==>> "Finder got an error: Can't get folder \"k8:Desktop:\"."
And if I give it the actual location, it produces an error saying
"Can't get folder \"Desktop\" of folder \"k8\" of folder \"Users\" of
startup disk."
Note: "k8" is the name of the User, and it appears to be sitting
correctly in the User folder which is on the disk "Macintosh HD"

The following results appear to me to indicate something
drastically wrong with the Finder. Is there any other explanation?
tell application "Finder" to get folder (path to desktop folder)
result===>>> folder "Desktop" of item "k8"
(that's it... no mention of the Users folder or of the startup disk)
What happens with this (without calling the Finder at all):
path to desktop folder
and does "k8" have any meaning for your system?
