I organized a rapid speed test a few hours ago. Here are the results.
For us AppleScript users of "do shell script" Tiger is 5 times slower

I haven't had time to get smile installed etc., but I'll test my
panther system in a bit, probably tomorrow.
I'm interested in exactly what slowdown you've experienced. Is it just
"do shell script" or is it all kinds of application calls? If every
app has this kind of calling overhead, I probably won't bother moving
to Tiger. If it's only the shell calls, I can live with it because I
don't use that for much. Also -- is it the the shell speed, or just
the speed of calling the shell from applescript? So that if you do the
bulk of the work in the shell. it's not an issue, but if your algorithm
is in applescript and you make a small call to do shell script in the
middle of a loop, you're hurting?
I'm asking because I'll probably not bother to install Tiger until
there's a resolution if this problem isn't localized but general.
