Oh really...straw men?
Let's see, what's the title of your post?
Why, "Finder F*ck-ups". No, no insinuation there. None at all.
The lead sentence in *your* original post:
" What's going on with the Finder in Tiger?"
Hmm...no, no insinuation about the Finder at all. You then go on to talk
about stuff that has very little to do with the finder outside of this
quote:
" I've got no problem with *copy protection* but having files disappear
from the Finder windows indicates some pretty pathetic programming from
Apple."
No, no, not disparaging the Finder team at all. Not even close. Especially
when that has little to do with the behavior you're reporting. (This happens
on pooched automounts all the time, so I pretty much can guarantee the
disappearing files are not exclusive to the DVD issue.)
Then in almost every single example of what you tried, you show that it's
pretty obviously not a Finder bug, but at NO point do you say "Well, it
looks like the title of this post was incorrect and misleading, as it's
obviously not a Finder bug", because hey, once you get started beating the
Finder team, stopping is so dull, because slapping the Finder team is what
all the kewl OS X kidz are doing.
Had you given your post a more accurate subject, such as "DVD Copying is
fuxxored under Tiger" then you not only wouldn't have initially been
insinuating the Finder was at fault, but you would have been on the right
track. The fact that, as your log file shows, the problem is coming out of
the kernel auth services in kauth should have been an obvious clue since:
The problem had to be common to both the finder, (and by extension carbon)
and mv, (and by extension the bsd file access APIs).
It had to be something that would override read permissions, which are
handled in the lowest level of the BSD "kernel", as perms of 666 should
allow you to copy files as long as the destination permissions are correct.
There's no guarantee that these two issues point at a kernel - level
service, but it's a much more intelligent starting point than insinuating
it's the Finder at all. Actually, had you just laid out the symptoms you'd
been seeing without all the ranting about Apple's pathetic programmers and
"Finder F*ckups", then getting to the point about the kauth issue would have
been much faster.
But to the point, this is a well-known problem in the video community with
Mac OS X 10.4 and DVDs. This did get changed in Mac OS X 10.4, and it's
hitting the DVDSP folks as well, as indicated by this post:
527025335.htm>.
I first heard about this in mid july, from a friend who does video and DVD
production. It's not new. But the way you worded your first post or two lead
me down the wrong line of thought on this. Had you made your post a bit more
open ended, it would have sparked that memory much sooner.
Really, wording your post correctly can solve many problems.

Here¹s a helpful tip for job interviews: try not to stab your future boss in
the arm with a freshly sharpened pencil. If you must stab someone with a
pencil, have the common sense to dull the point to a state where you can be
sure it won¹t easily break the skin.
