Dear Applescript companions,
I am surprised with the fact that we have not discussed the recent
shocking news on the Mac World, I have been following up every thread
on this list, and it seems to me that everyone might be afraid of
discussing the subject.
I indeed don't know why this has not been discussed. Are we subject to
censorship? Is my post going to be deleted?
There is something new happening, what is happening at this very moment
is not a simple "chip switch" or a switch of Mac Os 9 to Mac Os X.
In my opinion, what is happening right now is just as important as when
Apple offered the very first Mac, or when Gates offered MsWindows
version 1.
We are seeing ordinary PCs running Mac Os X!
Please don't miss-understand me. I don't want to encourage people to
hack Mac Os X, or to have it running on your PCs. I just want to
discuss the subject and its consequences to our lives.
It is ilegal to hack proprietary software and not talking about crime
doesn't make it vanish in air.
But I feel I am entitled to talk about this. Ever since 1999, when I
got my first Mac, I have been a MacUser, I have tried to convience
every friend or relative to migrate to our platform, in my country, due
to crasy taxing on imports and a "middle man" called Apple-Brazil, my
Dual G5 costed me closely to U$ 6,000! If you consider our low wages in
Brazil, you should agree with me that I have made a big investment in
my 5 macs.
I have also, for years, believed that we had computers with "Velocity
Engines", as Apple repeatedly taught us.
I have also believed that Applescript was an "easy to learn
english-like language", and so have for the past 2 years engaged myself
in learning AS. I have invested my time in a language that only 1% of
the computers can run.
I was shocked to see Jobs at WWDC declare that we were to move to Intel
chips. The first thing that came to my mind was that Mac Os X would run
on ordinary PCs... But Jobs repeatedly said he "would not allow this".
I read over and over again in the Internet that our hardware would
become "Pretty PC boxes" and no longer would be different than other
computers. I refused myself to believe this.
It is public that a hacker nicknamed DEADMOO has cracked the TPM
protections to run Mac OS X on ordinary PCs, and worse: they are
patching Mac OS X to recognize and initialize unsupported hardware!
I am saying this with the experience of someone who has touched a
keyboard of one of these PCs, and had a mouse in my very hands. Please
don't tell me it is buggy!!
Now let's try to figure out what is happening;
1) Apple has been 100% eficient in keeping it secret that they had Mac
Os X running on the x86 for years. We had never seen a piece of code
stolen from Apple's headquarters, or even a plain screen shot of a
"about this mac" window.
2) Intel's CEO repeatedly says that Apple should offer its operating
system to the x86 plataform. Intel is rich, but not as powerfull as MS,
MS's monopoly over operating system's has allways been unconfortable
for Intel.
3) Apple says its moving to Intel, and that the next IntelMacs will
only be available next year. Has Jobs gone nuts? are you going to buy a
new G5 if you know something new is coming? Apple certainly loses money
by declaring this. Where is the compensation comming from?
4) Apple offers transition kits to developers, made from ordinary Intel
main boards. Yes! You can go out there and buy the same D915GUX board
and build you own "transition kit". To avoid hackers from using our
operating system, Apple places a TPM chip and booting routines in OS to
check if it is an "authorized Mac". Apple's engineers even give them
TPM extensions names like blablaTPMblabla.kext, isn't it like saying
"hey look I am here! hack me!"?
5) Apple was not eficient at all in preventing hackers from running Mac
Os X on ordinary PCs. Didn't Apple try to simulate what hackers would
try before letting their "transition kits" out?
The operating system is cracked and is now in the "wild".
The consequences to all of this is unknown to me.
Are we going to enjoy a larger demographics for the software we develop?
Are we going to see Apple licensing Mac Os X to PC users?
Aren't we entitled to an official statement from Apple?
Do you really believe in everything Apple says?
Thanks for your patience in reading my long text,
Best Regards to you all,
