Personally, cURL would have been my first choice, rather than Safari... the more I use it the more I like it! That's just my preference though. Just for the record, I'd do it like this;

do shell script "curl http://images.apple.com/startpage/images/mighty_mouse_08022005a.gif > " & (quoted form of (the POSIX path of (path to the desktop) & "myimage.gif"))

...I suspect you know that already though. I can't see an easy way of doing it with Safari, although that doesn't mean there's not something clever that I've overlooked.

Having said that, there are some Automator actions which you might find useful, depending on exactly what you're wanting to do. Might be worth your while having a look at that.
