Entourage has used Unicode text since its inception in Entourage 2001
(Classic), even before OS X. Its clipboard transfers Unicode characters -
and I mean REAL Unicode characters that can't even be represented as
mishmash international text - to and from TextEdit, Word 2004, etc. all the
time. It was Unicode long before AppleScript was. Entourage's AppleScript
used to resolve to string if you didn't include 'as Unicode text' up to and
including the previous version, Entourage X, but in Entourage 2004 even that
is not necessary - its text is Unicode by default.
But Jay is using Entourage 10.1.6 - X. Even there, you should be able to
paste Unicode from the clipboard into Entourage. Jay should try doing that
manually. But maybe the AppleScript implementation of 'set the clipboard' in
Entourage X pastes just as string - then something gets muddled because the
accents, as Matt says - are understood as Unicode and it's the wrong flavor
for that part of the clipboard or something.
I don't have Entourage X functioning ay the moment. Jay, what happens if you
'set the clipboard to "[your long French text]" as Unicode text'? It works
in 2004 (and without it), but maybe not in 10.1.6.
