I think you are wasting your time. Anybody who relies on the OS for things
like PostScript interpretation or consistent colour management is going to
get burnt.
You should use Acrobat for this task if you have a minimal number of files
to handle on a daily basis.
For serious numbers of files, or for *professional use*, you should use a
proper RIP. Your email address suggests that you should have access to such
a device. Surely your pre-press people can enable a queue which allows you
to dump PDFs into a folder and have them saved out as TIFFs at a resolution
of your choice within seconds?
