2400+ dpi bitmaps can get pretty big - but they are normally only
rendered and then delivered to the imaging device. Using vanilla TIFF
for any other purpose seems wasteful to me. Maybe TIFF/IT would be
more suitable for your needs?

year's experience in pre-press and RIP PDFs to TIFF/IT and bitmap on
a daily basis.
You might want to try testing your workflow to see how Photoshop
copes with technically difficult originals:

Try the Altona Technical pdf that you'll find on that page.
