I believe I have tried that gimmick and it didn't work. But try it yourself,
typing in

ls -a /

I see the icon file is called

.VolumeIcon.icns

I tried it just now on a diskimage file and it didn't work, even though the
files in the diskimage are listed as having some content:


37063 Dec 16 15:26 .VolumeIcon.icns
4096 Dec 16 15:26 ._.VolumeIcon.icns


But feel free to experiment
