Yes, it works! I simply said:

cp /Volumes/Clarus/.VolumeIcon.icns /Volumes/PHOTOS/

Copied the icon file from one diskimage to another. When I clicked on the
Finder window the icon refreshed and it was there in the sidebar.

Pretty cool.
