Quick and dirty idea: did you have a look at the man page for
/usr/bin/hdiutil?
For example, if you are interested in images of HFS/HFS+ volumes,
you could try to parse the output of: /usr/bin/hdiutil hfsanalyze
/path/to/image
I tried both 'hdiutil hfsanalyze ...' and 'hdiutil info ...' but
found nothing useful. Probably a good thing, because I've decided to
use only the external, Finder visible, names of .dmg and .sparseimage
files. I think this will avoid "user confusion".
