File type and encoding rates.

Hi, my first post...

I am trying to create a simple script to copy a playlist to an iPod Shuffle - the problem being that AIFF files are not copied, so it is necessary to convert on those files. I generally keep files on the HD as AIFF and I only want to convert them when copying them to the Shuffle, otherwise the operation could be avoided by simply converting all files to mp3.

So in AppleScript how can I know the file type? AIFF / MP3 or WAV etc.? Is there a command in Finder similar to 'file' in the shell?

And second, is there a way to choose the encoding rate for MP3 in a script with out having to set it in the iTunes settings. I looked though the dictionary in iTunes but I don't see it. Quite possibly you can't. I am using Doug's scripts as a starting point.

TIA.
