Is Xcode Tools the Panther version of "Developer Tools"?
Yes.
How does X11 fit into the picture.
Into which picture? It's a windowing environment for those UNIX
applications that require it, or for running something like Solaris
FrameMaker on a remote Sun box. Not connected to the X-code tools.
Which bits of any/all of these are most useful in AppleScripting?
AppleScript Studio is part of Xcode tools. With it you can develop
applications in AppleScript, and enjoy full UI support from Interface
Builder. X11 doesn't have an AppleScript dictionary.
Where would I find the terminal commands which were missing from basic
installs (at least in Jaguar) like CPMac.
They are, IIRC, installed when you install the Xcode tools, but you
may not find them available unless you add the path to them in your
environment. In Terminal type "set" and look at your PATH. You will
need to modify it by adding the path to the folder containing the dev
tools tools (sic). It should look like this.
PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/Developer/Tools
I most definitely not a developer - but often find I need to install all
this stuff just to follow instructions in UNIX tutorials, and occasionally
just to run a couple basic things in terminal
Installing developer tools does give you quite a few more utilities.
Looks like it put the number up by roughly 200 or so.
Lastly any links to above appreciated.
I already have Xcode Tools on CD, but assume the CD not totally up
to date. (I kept going in circles on Apples Website which would
offer to sell me a CD, but mention I could download it for free -
but no download link to be found??)
If it's a current set of Panther CDs, just install the tools. I
don't recall updates showing up on the Apple web site. But if you're
registered as a developer you can get updates at developer/apple/com.
