I was more thinking of an AppleScript solution that could be used as part of a larger workflow. I am trying to find various areas where I can highlight the AppleScript strengths of iMagine Photo, and one of the things it can do is read and write the exif information quickly, because it can do it without rendering the image.

Thanks for pointing it out though, I had a quick look at it, which told me that some of the gps units store the information in gpx files which are a common xml format type of file. To parse those files I would have to use some xml parser AppleScript tool which looks like it will make the project more complicated than I have time for right now. I didn't want to have to involve third party tools that other people would have to install to use the script.

What I want to be able to do is to set the GPS exif information in
jpeg/TIFF files by comparing the exif capture date with the date
returned from the GPS unit, find the location at that time and use
that information to set the GPS information in the exif information.

You may want to contact the author of GPSPhotoLinker since it seems that he has already done what you wish. Check out: <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24820>
