There was only one way TO connect to OS 9 without third party software.

Out of the box, OS X supports:

ssh
ARD
AFP
SMB
FTP
sftp
scp
NFS
Telnet
rlogin
X11
VNC

And there's a couple more I left out.

What connection method are you wanting to monitor?
