Viewing a jpeg

To be able to compare an image in iPhoto side by side with it's original, I have a script that builds the path to the "Originals" folder and opens the original.

The problem with this is that it allows the original to be modified and saved, thereby loosing the "real" original. I don't see that there's a way to have Preview open the image read/only.

Safari could be a replacement for Preview for this task except that it doesn't scale the image to fit on the screen.

Does anyone have a solution for this? Ideally I'd use a standard Apple tool.
