Title: RE: Translating AppleScript to Visual Basic
Steven,
Visual Basic is a language that comes in many flavors, from VBScript to VB.NET applications, the latter being an immensely rich development environment with capabilities that goes far beyond what basic AppleScript in any flavor can do.
That however is no guarantee that you can do exactly the same things you can with AppleScript in OS X, because like in Mac OS it is up to each application to be scriptable. Illustrator and Photoshop have practically identical object models so they should be ok. I am guessing that the same goes for Corel Draw, and possibly freehand, although you must check both carefully. If you like most PC users will be using Microsoft Outlook you can rest assured that it is very scriptable.
Even with scriptable applications you can't be sure that it will be possible to recreate you scripts exactly as they were. If they are using language specific features, such as filters, performing the same thing in VB can be more difficult or time consuming, and once in a while close to impossible. On the other hand, there are also many cases where VB gives you possibilities not present in AS.
What I would suggest is that you hire a VB scripting expert for a day, and together with him/her walk through what you scripts do, and they should then be able to tell you whether it is possible in VB, and if they can see any specific difficulties ahead, perhaps even give you an estimate how long it would take to recreate all your scripts in VB
Prepare however that it will be a costly operation to do the transition, and like Wayne I question the logic of moving to PC, it will certainly not save your company money, quite the contrary I would say. The cost of porting your scripts alone will probably buy quite a few Macs
But perhaps the choice of platform is not up to you
Best regards

HELP!!!
My company is desperately seeking to replace our 18 Macs in our art department with PCs. AppleScript is the only thing stopping them from doing so.Over time I have developed very long scripts to automate applications to take away the mundane work from artists.Such apps are Freehand MX, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, OSX Finder, Mail and Corel Draw. They are seeking to translate this into VB. How safe am I? Is there anything I can develop that can’t be done in VB. Also too, sorry for asking here but, our current laser engrave equipment requires a plt file (HPGL - Hewlett-Packard Plot File). I am stuck in Classic using a version of CorelDraw to export this plt format. Does anyone know of anything I could try in OSX to create this file format? I don’t want to remain using Classic if I don’t have to.
With all the professional in this users list, I'm hoping someone can provide me some answers.
Thanks,
--Steven
